Why is cheating such a big deal? It’s just sex, right? As much as some people would like to believe that it’s just sex that is involved with cheating that is rarely the case. Sometimes the most damning acts are those that are committed when the other man or woman (as the case may be) isn’t even present.
Why is Cheating so Damaging to Marriages?
1) It is an act that breaks the marriage vow to forsake all others. Some people take all their marriage vows seriously. Other people hold some vows in higher regards than others. “Forsaking all others” is one that many people feel is or should be inviolate. For their spouses to break that particular vow invalidates everything else for some people.
2) It hurts the person you love most in the world. Most people don’t cheat because they’ve suddenly stopped loving their spouse. They didn’t wake up one day and love their spouse less. They simply succumbed to an opportunity or were worn down by time and circumstances. It doesn’t make cheating right but there are usually extenuating circumstances that have nothing to do with love or lack thereof for the spouse involved. With that in mind hurting their spouse is the last thing on the mind of most cheaters.
3) It introduces new secrets and lies to the relationship. While full disclosure about any and every thing may not be the best case for all relationships, lies and secrets on par with the ones that are told in order to hide an affair or buy time with the “other person” drive a wedge between partners and erode the relationship from the inside out. For many who have been cheated on it’s the lies and the secrets that were the most devastating. They knew something was going on and that all was not well but couldn’t pinpoint what was really going on. It’s also the hardest part to forgive but it feels like an added insult to the injury that cheating introduced to the relationship to begin with.
4) It destroys the confidence of the spouse. Self-confidence can be such a beautiful thing. When you are married you want the person you are married to be filled with the light of self-confidence and the understanding that he or she can accomplish great things. You want your spouse to know that he or she is a wonderful person and you want your spouse to feel safe in the comfort of your love. Cheating breaks down the foundation of self-confidence in your spouse. It leaves your spouse feeling doubt, hurt, and like a failure.
Despite all the damage the cheating does to relationships there are some good things that can come about as a result of the experience. It is possible to get your ex back even if you cheated but you’re going to have to both be willing to work at making your second chance work.
